Health safety standards such as GAP, GMP and HACCP are a set of principles, regulations and technical recommendations applicable to production, processing and food transport, addressing human health care, environment protection and improvement of worker conditions and their families.
In addition, for quite a few products producers must comply with phytosanitary regulations to prevent the entry and spread of plant diseases and pests into new areas.
Many countries, especially those in Europe, the USA and Japan, have set those standards as part of the requirements for allowing foreign produced foods to enter their food chain.
Consequently, the responsible departments of exporting countries here in SE Asia, including Thailand, have made those standards (at least GAP & GMP) mandatory for goods being shipped abroad to the above mentioned destinations.
In order to export their products into international markets, producers and exporters must comply with technical regulations (mandatory standards) set by public institutions to ensure product quality, environmental protection and consumer health. These regulations are different depending on the product and the country of export and import. Some regulations are based on international food standards, while others were developed by individual countries. Non-compliance with these requirements may lead to quarantining or product rejection by import countries.
